More about Šilo
Šilo is a village located on the northeastern coast of Island Krk, in the Stipanja cove, which is naturally enclosed and well-sheltered by a cape called Punta Šilo.
It is situated opposite the mainland and the town of Crikvenica, separated by the Vinodol Channel by a distance of only 2.5 km. Šilo was established by settlers from Crikvenica and neighboring villages who were in possession of land in this area. They traversed the Vinodol Channel to cultivate the land, thereby forging a vital link between the mainland and the island.
Between villages Šilo and Klimno lies one of the region's most significant attrac-tions, a cluster of coves offering exceptional diving spots. Among these, the standout is the submerged wreck of the Greek ship Peltastis, situated a mere 100 meters offshore at a depth of 32 meters. It is often said that what the sea gives, the sea can take away. One fateful night in 1968, amidst a raging storm, the sea claimed a towering 26-meter-high Greek cargo vessel, along with eight lives. Buf-feted by winds exceeding 150 km/h, the vessel, despite full engine power, met its demise against the rocky shores between Šilo and Klimno Bay. Hindered by the treacherous, muddy seabed, the anchors proved futile in stemming the ves-sel's tragic fate.
On Sunday, April 12, 1959, Croatia witnessed the inauguration of its first ferry line. Exactly 60 years ago, the wooden ferry boat "Bodulka," under the ownership of the shipping company "Kvarnerska plovidba," embarked from Šilo to Crikvenica, carrying guests, one bus, three cars, and several motorcycles. With a capacity for 12 vehicles and 140 passengers, and cruising at a speed of five knots, "Bodulka" marked a significant milestone in Croatian maritime history. This maiden voyage set in motion the development of tourism in Šilo. It is also worth noting that Saint Roch is revered as the patron saint of Šilo.
