More about Baška
The town of Baška is the most popular tourist destination in the southeast of Is-land Krk. Baška graces both a picturesque bay and a serene valley, adorned with sprawling vineyards and ancient olive groves. Nestled within this idyllic land-scape lies one of the Adriatic's most captivating pebble beaches, adding to the allure of this charming destination.
The 1.8 km long beach is universally acclaimed as a must-see location, drawing in thousands of visitors each year. The name ‘Baška’ or its earlier rendition Besca, first appeared in historical records in 1232. However, with the opening of Hotel Zvonimir in 1906, the tourism development in Baška truly commenced.
Baška is renowned for opening the first bathing area on the island with eighteen beach cabins. Beyond its importance as a tourist destination, Baška is significant in Croatian history because of the discovery of the Baška tablet in the church in Jurandvor close to the town. The Baška tablet, an early Croatian monument dating back to the year 1100, bears inscriptions in the transitional form of the Glagolitic script. It features an ornate string pattern reminiscent of grapevines. It was discovered on September 15, 1851, in the Church of St. Lucy in Jurandvor.
The Mediterranean ambiance is bound to envelop you as you wander through the narrow streets of Baška. And for those intrigued by the mysteries of the underwater realm, a visit to the Adriatic Aquari-um Baška promises an unforgettable exploration.
