Više o Omišlju
Omišalj is a small town nestled in the northwestern region of Krk Island, where the island is closest to the mainland. Perched on a steep cliff, Omišalj dominates the surrounding area of Kvarner.
Omišalj is unquestionably one of the oldest settlements on the island of Krk, da-ting back to the 3rd century. The Romans constructed it on a cliff 80 meters above sea level, as it provided an ideal vantage point for overseeing the Kvarner Gulf.
Originally, the location was named Fulfinium, while the name Omišalj is first mentioned in the 12th century in 1153.
When discussing Fulfinium, we're referring to a basilica shaped like a traditional Latin cross, notable for its remarkable preservation, extending intact to the roof-line. It stands as the only and largest preserved sacred structure of its kind not only on the island of Krk but also along the entire Croatian Littoral. As an excep-tionally demanding and costly project, the basilica could have been financed only by imperial or episcopal investment.
Today, the Rijeka Airport and the Liquid cargo terminal of the Port Authority of Rijeka are regarded as the most notable landmarks.
