Perched on a steep cliff, Omi\u0161alj dominates the surrounding area of Kvarner.<\/p>\n Omi\u0161alj is unquestionably one of the oldest settlements on the island of Krk, da-ting back to the 3rd century. The Romans constructed it on a cliff 80 meters above sea level, as it provided an ideal vantage point for overseeing the Kvarner Gulf.<\/p>\n Originally, the location was named Fulfinium, while the name Omi\u0161alj is first mentioned in the 12th century in 1153.<\/p>\n When discussing Fulfinium, we're referring to a basilica shaped like a traditional Latin cross, notable for its remarkable preservation, extending intact to the roof-line. It stands as the only and largest preserved sacred structure of its kind not only on the island of Krk but also along the entire Croatian Littoral.
